The Bill Rigby Memorial Society is a B.C.-based charity dedicated to improving, protecting, and maintaining the sustainability of fish stocks and marine ecosystems for future generations through an approach of advocacy, education, and research.

Our History

The Bill Rigby Memorial Society was established in 1975 by the United Fishermen and Allied Workers’ Union and named in honour of Bill Rigby, a lifelong member, officer, and welfare director at the union.

The society was originally founded to construct affordable housing for seniors retired from the commercial fishing industry.

To accomplish this goal, funds were generated by the union’s commercial fish harvesters through donations, bequests, and proceeds from annual herring sales.

In 1978, the society fulfilled its mission when it acquired land in Steveston, B.C., culminating in the establishment of the Bill Rigby Manor in 1987.

Since its inception, the society’s mission has grown and evolved; today, The Bill Rigby Memorial Society serves to protect and preserve marine life and commercial fisheries through an approach of spreading awareness, education, and conducting research.

Our Mission

Awareness

We’re dedicated to raising awareness for fish stocks and the marine environment. We do this by actively engaging with public bodies, industries, businesses, and individuals through programs and advocacy efforts.

Education

We strive to broaden public understanding and appreciation for the marine environment and fisheries through educational initiatives, including courses, seminars, and conferences.

Research

By conducting and sharing research on the marine environment, fisheries, and the conservation of fish stocks, we foster awareness and education on important topics related to fisheries and marine ecosystems.
